Department of Physics

The Department was established in 1962. The faculty is highly qualified and motivated including twenty Ph.D members. The interdisciplinary curriculum draws on faculty expertise in many areas of Applied Physics and includes such courses as Laser Physics, Applied Atomic & Nuclear Physics, Solid State Physics, Computer Science and its applications and Electronics etc.

The department has seven well-equipped laboratories where students perform experiments of advanced level. At present the Department is providing facilities to the Postgraduate classes for research. The department is offering BS Physics (4 Years), M. Phil (Applied Physics), M.Phil (Nanoscience and Technology) and Ph.D. (Physics) programs. The M.Phil (Physics) curriculum balances many important dimensions of both general and Applied Physics employing both conceptual and Technical approaches, the programme provides students with a solid base of general skills through core courses, and then enriches that knowledge through specialized advanced electives, laboratory work and research in various fields of physics. The students are expected to undergo research projects with the guidance and supervision of a highly qualified faculty.
The supervised research by postgraduate Studies in important areas of Applied Physics is also being carried out in Collaboration with R&D organizations like PAEC, Optics Lab, and Institute of Optronics & INMOL etc.
The laboratory work is backed up by state-of-the-art laboratories where students have the opportunity to perform experiments of an advanced level with the special emphasis on the applied concepts of Physics.  The primary aim of these programs is to involve the postgraduate students into those areas of Applied Physics which are important for Scientific and Technical Development in Pakistan. The department so far has produced 580 M.Phil. and 466 M.Sc. students, who are serving in different educational institutes like Lahore College for Women University, G.C. University Lahore, G.C.University Faisalabad, F.C. College University, COMSATS, PIEAS, etc. R & D Organizations like PAEC, NESCOM, OPTICS Lab. KANUPP etc. and in the field of Medical Physics in Jinnah Hospitals, Mayo Hospital, Shaukat Khanum Hospital, INMOL etc. The department has also produced 32 Ph.D. and 35 are pursuing their Ph.D. degree. Many graduates are serving in foreign institutions.

1. Laser & Optronics Centre

Laser and Optronics Center was established at the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore in 2007. The center is of its own kind in any educational institute of Pakistan having state-of-art laboratories equipped with seven Laser Systems including Femto Second Ti:Sphire Laser, Nano Second Excimer Laser, Nitrogen Laser, Nd:YAG Laser, open cavity Nd:Yag Laser, Dye Laser and Solid State Lasers. Also there are well-equipped Computer and Advance Electronics Laboratories in the Centre along with a Library with comprehensive collection of books on Laser and Optronics which provide favorable environment for skill development, learning and reading. With the facilities available at the Laser and Optronics Centre, research is presently being carried out in the fields of Photonics, Optoelectronics, Laser Matter Interaction, Laser induced Plasma, Material Processing and Fabrication, and Sensors/Actuators Development.

2. Nanotechnologies Research Center

The Nanotechnology Research Centre (NRC) was established in 2008 in the Department of Physics to focus on precision engineering or tailoring of materials at nano scale. In addition to the nano scale research facilities, the NRC also has created programs to attract researchers and to facilitate the scientists. The Nanotechnology Research Centre (NRC) was established in 2008 in the Department of Physics to focus on precision engineering or tailoring of materials at nano scale. In addition to the nano scale research facilities, the NRC also has created programs to attract researchers and to facilitate the scientists. Besides this, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) have been installed to facilitate researchers and industry to perform morphological analysis of different samples. The Department can provide its expertise in the above mentioned areas at National and International level.

3. Centre for Nanotechnology and Advanced Material Research (CNAMR)

University of Engineering and Technology established a modern and state of the art Centre for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials Research (CNAMR) at its Main Campus adjacent to Laser & Optronics Center. This centre has latest High-tech equipment, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HRTEM) and Optical Microscopes, Ion beam milling, sample preparation units, X-ray diffractometer, Nanoindentor with AFM.
